Client desired to open up their kitchen to the great room with dining area. The kitchen was walled in and work area was poor both from a space and layout perspective. In order to keep the project within our client’s budget, we decided to integrate the old with the new to create a customized kitchen without the higher price tag.

Our client liked her existing cabinetry, so one of our challenges was to integrate the new, custom cabinetry into the existing cabinetry. Some of the existing appliances were reused and integrated into the design, such as the white stove top and oven.  A new double door stainless refrigerator was used, adding a modern touch to this updated kitchen.

The structural changes to the kitchen were a challenge since walls had to be removed and the kitchen designed to work seamlessly with the rest of the Great Room. The walls blocking the kitchen off from the rest of the Great Room were removed. Engineering was provided by DRK Consulting for the reinforced engineered beam for the first floor point loads.  All structural changes and elements were carefully executed.

The work triangle was redesigned, improving ease of food prep, cooking and clean up. A custom island was designed and built to provide ample food preparation space, storage and an eating area.  The island helped form a visual transition from the great room to the kitchen area, but kept the space open and inviting.  The end result is a bright, comfortable open living area that satisfies our client’s every desire.
