For this two-story home with a 60's style decor, we updated the entire kitchen to create a stylish modern look of the 90's. The kitchen had a small eat-in dinette area and a separate formal dining room. For our clients, the kitchen has been an essential part of the of their home where they spend quite a bit of their time preparing meals, eating, and socializing. They wanted a kitchen that would be larger, attractive and comfortable for socializing with families and friends, yet still fulfill its main role as a highly functional area for food preparation and storage. They also wanted a brighter and warmer feel to the space.

The existing kitchen had a small eat-in dinette area and a separate formal dining room. First, the wall dividing the kitchen and dining room was removed. A window over the sink in the original plan was removed and the opening was concealed to provide more wall space. The window, which overlooked the backyard, was replaced with a sliding door to provide a rear entry access and additional natural lighting. We laid in plywood over existing sub flooring to provide an even support for the new vinyl flooring

The new kitchen layout was carefully planned to consider the placement of each appliance and work-areas for a more functional kitchen that allows everyday tasks to be more pleasurable and easy to perform. Maintaining the rules of the typical working triangle, the kitchen design provides an efficient work flow with minimal steps and adequate counter space close to all appliances. Also, adequate walking clearances, with consideration cabinet and appliance doors, were planned. Under-the-counter fluorescent lighting was another big improvement. It provides additional lighting and can be dimmed and brightened to reflect a mood. The ceiling fan assists in airflow throughout the space.
