Project Description
The owners of this 1980s home wanted to update their kitchen to meet the wife's needs as a pastry chef (i.e. maximum storage and custom height work area) and their combined desire for an updated appearance which matched their soft, naturalistic, yet contemporary, flair.

Problem Solution
Give a more open feeling to the windows Changed existing twin casement windows with a wide center mullion to a double hung window from Anderson with slimmer lines. We also finished the interior perimeter of the window with drywall.
Maximize cabinet function in the same footprint as the existing so as to leave the existing floor tile. Eliminated base/wall cabinets beside the refrigerator and replaced with a full height pantry cabinet. We also eliminated the blind wall cabinet at the right of the stove and replaced it with a full access wall cabinet. We added a 24" deep wall cabinet above the refrigerator for additional storage.
Custom height work area for pastry and food prep Custom cut two cabinets to the homeowners' specifications for a finished height of 34 1/2" (standard is 36") and used a wood top for personalized comfort.
Bring the appearance up-to-date We created focal points by using faux-leaded glass on selected wall cabinets and added stylish pendant lights over the sink. We also created visual contrast by using rough slate tile for the backsplash and granite for the countertops. We removed the out-dated dropped ceiling to create a more open area.
Maximize lighting in the area Replaced old fluorescent lighting with ample recessed can lighting, as well as added undercabinet task lights and put pendants above the sink.
